Real estate agents vs realtors have a fierce debate over who is the better agent for your home.

We’re sorry that you’ve found your way to this blog post, it looks like you’ve been trolling the depths of the internet and have stumbled across one of the hottest topics with some time on your hands. If we have to hazard a guess, we’d say you can’t decide whether to use a real estate agent or a realtor.

Well, this one is up to you! There are technically two camps: realtor or real estate agent. But, here’s the deal. It seems like you can’t have too many agents working on your place at one time. “Whether they’re an agent or a realtor, the more people you have viewing a propery, the more generous the offers you will inevitably get. So, now the big issue you’re trying to sort out is the difference between real estate agents vs realtors. Well, they are a little different. A realtor actually has to have gone into the real estate career, as mandated by the National Association of Realtors. Meanwhile, a real estate agent, basically, just needs to be good at over-selling homes.

“A realtor is skilled in the workings of the real estate industry IMO [in my opinion] and a Realty Agent is skilled in the art of selling properties,” says Gina Are, COO of HouseHold.

“A realtor is able to provide objective advice, help buyers with questions and negotiate with sellers for the best prices” she continues. “A real estate agent on the other hand, on their end, simply focuses on selling property.”

So, you can see that there are different avenues you can take. But, here’s the thing with humans. It’s not always about what profession you are in, it’s about what you know. Like, if you attach yourselves to someone who knows what they are doing and have a well a trained eye for its, they will be more than happy to help you with your home.

Ultimately, the final decision is yours. Kind of like everything else in life.

How long does it take to become a realtor?

Becoming a realtor in the United States is a rigorous process and requires a lot of time and investment before you can get your real estate license. On average, it takes 8-12 months to complete the steps required to become a realtor.
Some things you’ll need in order to become a realtor includes firstly, obtaining a pre-qualifying course, studying for and taking the national exam, having a sponsoring broker who will oversee your work, and finally, getting your commercial broker’s license in your state.

If you want to become a realtor, many professional realtor (REALTOR®) associations offer pre-qualifying and PAB courses to potential licensees at local area colleges and universities. These courses will teach you about finance, contracts, legalities of real estate, and more so that you’re knowledgeable in these areas.

After completing the pre-qualifying coursework, you’ll need to study for and take the national exam. You can expect to study and take a pre-test at least two weeks before the exam and, as per the National Association of REALTORS®, pass the pre-test (which forces you to demonstrate a certain level of knowledge) in order to take the actual exam. Once you pass the exam, you’ll be ready to become a realtor.

Next, most states require potential real estate agents to become sponsored by a professional realtor. They’ll supervise your work and license you to get your realtor classification depending on your state needs.

Finally, you’ll need to obtain and receive your commercial broker’s license in your state. Each state has their own requirements for this. And if you’re in Texas, for example, you need to attend and graduate from an eight-week training course approved by the state or the Texas Real Estate Commission.

Some states require applicants to have work experience at a commercial (run-down) or residential broker’s office before they can qualify for becoming a state licensed broker.
